Mariaelena Roqué. Silenci despullat. UnaDonaUna

Past

24/01/2025 - 22/06/2025

Mariaelena Roqué, a Catalan-Venezuelan artist, is the author of a multidisciplinary work that comes from the confluence of various disciplines such as dance, performance, theater, cinema and music that emerge in a visual, objectual and scenic work, exceptional and unique. Installed in Terres de l’Ebre, since the eighties of the last century, her work constitutes a song to the passion of life, and is a celebration of the female body and its multiple power of transformation and resilience.

The exhibition we present offers a retrospective of his work from 1985, when he settled permanently in Catalonia, to the present day, 2024. It begins with the short film Piedraperla (1985), and his first creations with Carles Santos, such as Pertorbació inesperado (1986), with whom he founded and co-directed the Carles Santos Company from 1995 to 2010, where he is responsible for the creation of countless and extraordinary costumes and stage spaces, up to his latest actions, performances and installations. In dialogue with works from the collection of the Museum of Modern Art of Tarragona, her syncretic creations, which are born from the tradition of the visual and performing arts of the European and American avant-garde, are inspired by both the tradition of European Christianity and Romanesque art, as well as by Latin American paganism and baroque and other cultures of the world, to show an empowered woman who is critical of the social and cultural image of women subjected to patriarchal power.
