Water is not neutral. It is drenched in politics. It sustains life and delivers death. It creates paper and erases memories. Though often perceived as a life-giving element, it can be associated with destruction, control and transformation. It Rains on Wet Paper is a collection of thirty publications and two video pieces that explore the multifaceted nature of water through irony and resistance. It is a call to arms for art that is not only seen, but felt; not only observed, but experienced.
Through the eyes of the invited artists and their works, the sea is profound and dreamlike, yet also troubling. Rivers are memory machines: sites of mourning, labour and disappearance. Puddles of water, salt ponds and dried-out wells. Wetness as a symbol of decay, but also of a political and emotional force that takes the form of ‘unclean’ bodily fluids: tears, sweat, blood and urine. Misty rain refuses to allow the image to dry out, to become stable or controllable.
