Publications

The publications edited by the School bear witness to the work carried out over time by the different departments, reflected in the artistic output generated in the School’s classrooms—texts and images as a permanent record of the School’s contributions to the world of Visual Communication, Art, and Design.

With 70 final projects, this third edition of #peramoralart showcases the educational work of the School of Art and Design of the Diputació in Tarragona, presenting the critical and artistic vision of our students from the 2022–2023 academic year.

This publication is much more than a collection of final projects; it is a testimony to the creative drive that arises from a personal need, from the effect of a deep commitment to life and art. It is #peramoralacausa, a reflection of the inherent value of creativity that urges us to look beyond utility and discover the profound impact that art has on our society.

This catalogue reminds us that art is a form of human connection and critical reflection on the world around us. Thus, #peramoralart becomes an invitation to continue exploring, creating, and sharing, not only for the love of beauty but also for the love of the cause it represents.

With this second edition, we repeat the title: #peramoralart, an expression that dates back to Aristotle and has evolved over time to highlight artistic creation for the sake of art itself, without seeking material results. This is the spirit of the publication and of the work carried out at the School of Art and Design.

In these pages you will find the final projects of our students from the 2021–2022 academic year, a glimpse of their creative journey filled with experiences and learning. The projects reflect the passion, dedication, and talent of those who have chosen art and design as their means of expression, revealing the personal effort that this path entails.

#peramoralart speaks to us about everything we do without expecting anything in return, everything that goes beyond what is established, with no reward other than risk, boldness, and the discovery of new visions of reality. This publication is a testimony to the creative work born from the passion for art and design, inviting us to observe reality with an analytical, creative, and personal gaze, bringing it onto paper, the screen, or the canvas.

It also represents the journey undertaken by students in the training programmes of the School of Art and Design of the Diputació in Tarragona, where the path is as important as the final destination. Through these pages we discover processes of exploration and personal growth, the effort to build a courageous, personal visual language.

#peramoralart is our antidote to uncertainty, the tool that keeps our gaze diverse and critical. It is the attitude of the teaching staff who, together with the students, work to go beyond established curricula, creating spaces of complicity, revelation, and collective creativity.

This publication was presented in June 2008 and consists of a collection of graphic works by students, alumni, and teachers reflecting on the need for design in our daily lives.

In the presentation we can read:
“What is the most important thing in life? What part of our life is occupied by design? How does it affect us? What does it mean to us emotionally? Is design passion, or rather, does it still lead us to a state of passion?”

This catalogue showcases the work carried out in the Illustration Programme since its beginning at the School of Art and Design of Tarragona in the 2001–02 academic year, and includes the first five graduating classes.

Its approach emphasised that, in a world increasingly concerned with immediacy, security, speed, and irresponsible consumption, the practice of illustration becomes, above all, an intelligent act—an act of creation, idea transmission, struggle, opinion, and judgement. It is an act that cannot leave anyone indifferent, because it does not become a merely decorative resource accompanying the written word; quite the opposite: it underlines it and therefore conveys a judgement.

*Optic Nerve* is a publication from the Photography Department, which has produced four editions.

The second edition, titled “Presentations,” brings together projects that explore the use of photography from different points of view and in varied contexts, as a tool for researching and constructing individual and collective identities. The publication is divided into the sections “Us,” “Them,” and “Me,” addressing the concept of identity.

“Us” deals with the identity of the group to which one belongs and with which one identifies. The roots shared as a group. The notion of the individual as a generational, cultural, class-based being, etc.

“Them” illustrates the gaze toward the other and outlines the authors’ position in relation to the unknown and the unfamiliar. Distance allows objectivity while at the same time leading to a need for understanding.

Finally, “Me” presents the subjective gaze of the self, the loop of constructing one’s personal image.

This publication was released in 2010, marking ten years of the painting programme since the latest educational reform implemented in these studies.

It includes texts contributed by two major figures representing what painting might mean today in our region: Joaquim Chancho and Perejaume, two texts that complement each other perfectly, as do their ways of understanding art.

It also features definitions of the word “painting” contributed by people from various backgrounds within the art world (critics, students, teachers, artists, etc.). These definitions serve as small windows through which we can then open the door to the studio to observe some of the works and processes carried out over these ten years.

The latest *Optic Nerve* publication was released in 2012.

The edition, titled “Second Nature,” presents the work carried out in recent years by the School’s Photography Department related to the photographic documentation of the Camp de Tarragona region.

The publication was created with the intention of showcasing the most interesting and highest-quality works produced by students of the Artistic Photography training programme—works that became representative of the School’s documentation of the territory.
